The practical desktop route is AdBlock-Maxxer: download it, load the extracted folder into your browser's extensions page, turn it on, and refresh YouTube. Easiest alternative: a blocking browser like Brave.
AdBlock-Maxxer is a free, unpacked extension for Chrome, Brave, and Edge. It uses maintained filter lists for normal ad blocking. The optional YouTube Reclaim companion is only for accounts that hit server-side ad walls. Here is the actual setup, plus the honest limits on phones.
🥇 The two free routes that work
A blocking browser (easiest)
The lowest-effort route is a browser that blocks ads on its own — Brave being the obvious pick. Nothing to install, ads gone out of the box, works on phones too.
⚠️ Trade-off: you're switching browsers, and built-in blockers sometimes lag a day or two behind YouTube's changes.
Install AdBlock-Maxxer (most control)
Open the AdBlock-Maxxer page, download the current browser ZIP, and unzip it somewhere permanent. Do not delete or move that folder after you install it — the browser loads the extension from there.
Open chrome://extensions, brave://extensions, or
edge://extensions. Turn on Developer mode, click
Load unpacked, and choose the extracted folder that contains manifest.json.
Click the puzzle-piece menu and pin the AdBlock-Maxxer shield. Click the shield, make sure the YouTube blocking toggle is on, then refresh any YouTube tab that was already open. Normal YouTube, Spotify, Twitch, and wider-web blocking now work without the companion.
🔄 Updating: replace the extracted files with the newest ZIP, then click the browser's refresh icon on the extension card.
🎯 Check the install before judging it
- It should be enabled for the current site — click the shield and confirm YouTube blocking is on.
- Refresh after installing or updating — a tab that was open before the extension loaded will not be retroactively changed.
- Keep the folder intact — this is an unpacked install, so deleting or moving it disables the extension.
📱 The mobile asterisk
Desktop extensions don't run on iPhone Safari or inside the YouTube app. On your phone, the free options are a blocking browser (Brave) or, on iPhone, a browser like Orion that supports extensions. The YouTube app itself can't be extended — there's no free, no-jailbreak way to kill in-app ads that lasts. Watch in a browser instead.
🛡 What about "anti-adblock" warnings?
When YouTube flashes "ad blockers aren't allowed," it's detecting your blocker — not beating it. First refresh the page and make sure the extension is enabled. If the video still black-screens or shows an "allow ads" wall on your account, that is server-side enforcement and a normal extension cannot remove it by itself.
🛠 Server-side ad wall? Add YouTube Reclaim
Download the optional companion from the AdBlock-Maxxer page,
unzip it, and double-click abm-companion.exe once. Keep its folder together, leave the
extension's YouTube Reclaim toggle on, and retry the video. The companion runs locally;
you do not need Python, and you do not need it for normal YouTube, Twitch, or Spotify blocking.
Rule of thumb: start with the extension, turn it on, and refresh the page. Add the companion only for a server-side ad wall, and only download it from the official Maxxtopia page. That keeps the setup free, understandable, and reversible.
